What is Flathub, and is it safe?

Flathub is the main store for Flatpak apps on Linux. Here's how it works and why it's a trustworthy place to get software.

By the Flatnic team ·

Flathub is a central store for Linux apps packaged as Flatpaks. Instead of hunting for a .deb or .rpm that matches your exact distribution, you install one Flatpak that works everywhere.

Why it's trustworthy

  • Apps are built on Flathub's own infrastructure from the published source, and updates are delivered the same way.
  • Each app runs in a sandbox with limited access to your system; you can review and tighten its permissions.
  • Many apps are "verified", meaning the listing is maintained by the original developer.

Permissions

You can see and change what an app is allowed to access (files, network, devices) with the Flatseal app, also on Flathub. That's a level of control you don't get with a traditional installer.

Every Download button here opens the app's official Flathub page, where you install it.
